Nestled deep in the interior of Namosi, Eco Highland Backpackers Fiji is creating unique tourism experiences that blend adventure, culture, and community.

Founded by Vilise Mataika, the eco-tourism retreat is situated on a seven-acre property between the villages of Saliadrau and Naqarawai, offering visitors an authentic Fijian highland experience through activities such as hiking, river tubing, horse riding, cultural tours, and overnight stays.

The business has completed key stages of its development, including traditional bures, a dining hall, and guest facilities handcrafted by local villagers using traditional building methods and locally sourced materials

A major milestone was achieved in July 2026, when the business received nine new quad bikes through funding support from the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications. The quad bikes were supplied through Vision Motors. The new fleet will enhance the retreat’s adventure tourism offerings, allowing visitors to explore waterfalls, scenic trails, and the breathtaking landscapes of the Namosi Highlands.

The business recently welcomed its first guests and continues to grow through strategic partnerships with Namosi Eco Retreat and Vision Motors, helping strengthen its operations and expand its tourism experiences.

For Vilise, the vision extends beyond tourism.

“We want to create opportunities for local communities, preserve our culture, and showcase the beauty of Namosi for future generations.”

Through sustainable tourism and community partnerships, Eco Highland Backpackers is helping showcase the natural beauty, culture, and adventure opportunities that make the interior of Namosi one of Fiji’s hidden gems.
