Merchant Finance Limited (Merchant Finance), previously known as Merchant Finance & Investment Company Limited, has a rich history dating back to its official establishment in 1986. This establishment was a collaborative effort involving the Australian Guarantee Corporation (AGC), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the Fiji Development Bank, with the primary goal of providing a diverse range of financing facilities to the market. Subsequently, in April 1992, Merchant Finance obtained a license as a Credit Institution, marking a significant milestone in its evolution as a financial institution. This licensing expansion empowered the company to delve into the realm of investment products, particularly focusing on offering term deposits to its clientele. Through these strategic moves, Merchant Finance solidified its position in the financial landscape, catering to the financial needs of its customers and playing a pivotal role in the economic development of Fiji within the region.
Following the divestiture of their shareholdings in August 1997 by AGC and IFC, Merchant Finance has successfully transitioned into a 100% Fijian-owned corporation. The company’s current shareholdings are now divided between Fijian Holdings Limited, holding 70%, and FHL Trustee Limited, holding the remaining 30% as the trustee to Fijian Holdings Unit Trust. Despite facing constraints in terms of competitiveness based on pricing, Merchant Finance is focused on sustaining its competitive edge through a strategic emphasis on customer service provision and the continual enhancement of both existing and new business relationships. This shift in ownership structure marks a significant milestone for Merchant Finance, solidifying its position as a locally-owned entity poised for growth and success in the Fijian financial landscape.
