Serving an island population of approximately 1,200 people across 17 villages and two tikinas, Wayne Anthony Tovehi has spent the last three to four years helping keep communities connected through reliable transportation services on Vanua Balavu in Fiji’s Northern Lau Group.

Originally from Sawana, Lau, and raised in Naqara, Vanua Balavu, Wayne has built a transportation business that addresses one of the most critical needs in remote island communities—access. His fleet of three vehicles, including two acquired through financing support, enables residents to travel across the island for work, education, business and essential services.

Vanua Balavu covers approximately 57 square kilometers and is characterized by volcanic hills, raised coral limestone formations, fertile soils, and extensive coral reefs. While its geographical features contribute to the island’s beauty, they can also make travel and logistics challenging for residents and businesses alike.

Wayne’s transportation services support daily mobility for communities spread across the island, including students, families, and businesses. His operations contribute to improved connectivity by helping residents access schools, health services, government offices and commercial activities centered around Lomaloma, the island’s main service hub.

Today, Wayne’s fleet serves communities across an island home to approximately 1,200 residents, providing a critical link between villages and essential services. In many maritime communities, reliable transportation is fundamental to economic participation and social wellbeing, making operators such as Wayne an important part of local development.

“Transportation is a challenging but good business on the island,” says Wayne.

“The biggest challenges we face are fuel costs and vehicle maintenance, but it is important that we keep our vehicles up to date so we can continue providing a better service for the people of Vanua Balavu.”

Rising fuel prices and the high cost of vehicle maintenance remain among the primary operational challenges. The remote location means vehicle parts; repairs and servicing can be costly and time-consuming.

Despite these obstacles, Wayne remains committed to strengthening transportation access across the island. Through continued investment in his fleet and services, he is helping improve mobility and connectivity for communities throughout Vanua Balavu.

Beyond transportation, Wayne and his family also operate a local retail shop that serves the needs of residents in the community. They have recently diversified into the tourism sector through the establishment of a homestay business, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience the unique culture and hospitality of Vanua Balavu. With plans to expand their accommodation offerings in the future, the family continues to explore new opportunities that contribute to economic activity and development on the island.

Wayne’s journey highlights the important role that small businesses play in Fiji’s maritime islands. Through transportation, retail and accommodation services, he and his family are helping to improve access to essential services, create economic opportunities and support the wellbeing of communities across Vanua Balavu.
